Works of the Heart

I think that sometimes I get a little to caught up in trying to do the work of God or more appropriately doing the work of the Christian life, and I neglect the heart part of it. I do it because it is expected, because it makes me feel good, because other people will look at me differently when they see me doing it, or maybe because I think it is expected of me. It isn’t that helping people and doing the work of the kingdom isn’t good…It’s great! But I think that in the eyes of the Lord, the state of the heart of the worker is just as important as the act itself. Oswald Chambers said, “We must continually keep our soul open to the fact of God’s creative purpose, and never confuse or could it with our own intentions.” My focus has shifted from allowing God’s love to flow through me, to getting caught up in trying to make all the “fruit” I can…Ultimately it is completely unfulfilling because at that point I am not doing it for his glory but my own…
